Ijen volcano complex in the eastern end of Java consists of a group of small stratovolcanoes constructed in a large 20-km-wide Ijen (Kendeng) caldera. The north wall of the caldera formed arcuate ridge prominent, but in other places the edge of the caldera was buried by post-caldera volcanoes, including Mount Merapi stratovolcano, which form the 2,799 m high point of the complex Ijen. Immediately west of Mount Merapi is historically famous active crater, which contains almost 1-km-wide, turquoise colored, acid crater lake.
